Curworthy Devon Oake Smoked cheese

£7.50

Devon Smoake

Devon Smoake begins life as Curworthy’s award‑winning Devon Oke, a sweet, supple, six‑month‑matured cheese made using a washed‑curd technique that naturally lowers acidity. Once perfectly ripened, the cheese is cut into quarters and cold‑smoked over oak chippings for three hours, giving it a delicate, aromatic smokiness while preserving its creamy texture.

The result is a cheese that’s:

  • Sweet and mellow, with a gentle smoky lift
  • Smooth and supple in texture
  • A softer, sweeter alternative to smoked cheddar
  • Pasteurised and non‑vegetarian

If you love cheeses with depth but not sharpness, Devon Smoake stands out.

Pasteurised; not suitable for vegetarians.

For more than 30 years, Curworthy Cheese has been handmade at Stockbeare Farm in the rolling Devon countryside, just under the shadow of Dartmoor. Using milk from a single local herd and traditional farmhouse methods, Curworthy has built a reputation for creating full‑fat, semi‑hard cheeses with a creamy, mellow character that deepens beautifully with age. Their cheeses are matured slowly in temperature‑controlled rooms, turned by hand, and made without colouring or preservatives — just pure Devon milk, salt, and skill.

Perfect Pairings

Devon Smoake’s subtle smokiness makes it incredibly versatile. Try it with:

  • Sandridge Barton wines — especially a crisp white or lightly oaked English rosé
  • Fig or apple chutney — the sweetness complements the smoke
  • Crusty sourdough or seeded crackers
  • Smoked or cured meats for a layered charcuterie board
  • Cider or amber ale — the malt and orchard notes work beautifully

For something special, melt Devon Smoake into a toasted sandwich, grate it over roasted vegetables, or fold it into a smoky mac and cheese.

Build the Perfect Balanced Cheeseboard

With the addition of Devon Smoake, you can now create a cheeseboard that truly has something for everyone — a showcase of textures, milk types, and flavours that celebrate the best of Devon cheesemaking.

Start with Soft & Creamy

Choose from Sharpham’s award‑winning soft cheeses, each offering a different style of indulgence:

Quicke’s Mature Clothbound Cheddar — deep, savoury and beautifully sharp, adding a hit of umami and heritage to the board

Introduce Depth with Blue
Finish with Smoke & Sweetness
  • Curworthy Devon Smoake — the final flourish: mellow, gently smoky, and wonderfully aromatic

Its oak‑smoked sweetness ties the whole board together, adding warmth and complexity without overpowering the other cheeses.
